This has led some to consider the practice a waste of time, ineffective or some kind of hoax. Is flossing really effective? According to an article on the conclusions drawn from this are misleading.

Apparently the government does not have evidence that flossing is effective, but it seems no real evidence was collected. And therein lies the rub. Just because the government has not conducted studies on flossing’s benefits (or lack thereof) doesn’t mean it isn’t effective.

According to the Snopes article, to conduct the trials necessary to determine the effectiveness of flossing would have been prohibitively costly, taking years to accomplish. Moreover, there may have been ethical issues involved, preventing a truly blind study. As they point out, could researchers really ask half the study group to not do something (use floss) that might actually be of benefit and put them at risk of gum disease or worse? Add to that variables like each individual’s ability to floss correctly.

Imagine two groups in a study. One does not floss at all, the other may contain persons who floss incorrectly or badly. How can the results be accurately compared or trusted?

Regardless of the government’s decision to remove flossing from current dietary guidelines, it would be hard to find a dentist who did not agree that flossing is a key tool in maintaining overall dental health.

It’s a well known fact that food particles left between teeth contribute to gingivitis and other periodontal problems. So why wouldn’t it be a good idea to use that tool that removes those particles?
